Compare hourly rates and the full job total

Ask each company to price the same inventory and services. A smaller crew may have a lower hourly rate but need more time; a larger crew may finish faster. Neither is automatically the cheaper total.

• Crew and truck: How many movers and vehicles are included?
• Minimum charge: What is the minimum billable time and rounding increment?
• Travel: When does billing start and stop? Is there a separate truck or travel charge?
• Access: Are stairs, a long carry, elevator waiting or extra stops accounted for?
• Extras: Confirm packing labour, materials, specialty items, storage and applicable taxes.

A worked moving-budget example

This is an arithmetic example, not a Move Calgary Now rate, market average or offer. Suppose a written quote lists $150 per hour for a crew and truck, four work hours and one additional travel hour. Labour and travel would be 5 × $150 = $750 before extras and tax. If materials are $50, the subtotal becomes $800. An extra work hour would add $150 under those assumptions.
